Playing Ball

In the illustrated booklet, "Children's Amusements" published in 1822 by Samuel Woods and Sons, the term "base ball" is never used. But on a full-page color wood cut, "PLAYING BALL" clearly depicts a baseball-like game featuring players properly stationed at their bases and later known as pitcher, batter and fielders. By comparison with the trap ball illustration, it is noteworthy that in this image the boys are "playing ball" in poses remarkably similar to the game that is recognized as baseball.
