When Baseball Was Played Like Dodgeball

This image, a woodcut from 1888, was produced long after the New York rules prevailed among ballplayers. It illustrates one of Massachusetts town ball's distinctive features: runners on the base paths could be put out with a well-placed throw to the body. The called it a "stinger."
