The Odds of Turning Pro
In the September 4, 2017 issue of TIME magazine, there was a story titled, "How Kid's Sports Became a $15 Billion Industry," written by Sean Gregory.
You can still read it online and it will have many parents nodding and shaking their heads.
In the print edition of that particular issue, the story included an sidebar that crunched the numbers and odds of playing competitively after high school. I found this fascinating and I clipped it and saved it.
Here are the odds:
541,000 boys play high school ball
1 in 99 will go on to play Division 1
1 in 1,1860 will play in the NBA
417,000 boys play high school soccer
1 in 73 will play Division 1
1 in 835 will play in MLS
483,000 boys play high school ball
1 in 47 will play Division 1
1 in 764 will play in MLB
1.1 million boys play high school football
1 in 41 will play Division 1
1 in 603 will play in the NFL
*The odds are based on the number of high school player in 2013, NCAA players in 2013 and professional players in 2015.
