Bird's-Eye View of the City Ball Park

Pittsburgh 1

Pitttsburgh Ball Park

Bird's-eye views offered a fresh aerial perspective to proud citizens and prospective residents of urban areas in American during the last quarter of the nineteenth century. Panoramic in scope and meticulous in detail, they encompassed entire cities, taking in not only the bustling downtowns with their rigorously laid-out street grids and monumental commercial and municipal buildings, but also the abutting leafy residential neighborhoods, light industrial areas and outlying undeveloped tracts.

Ballparks were ubiquitous by the 1870s, usually built on open land adjacent to fairgrounds, public parks, rail yards or riverfronts, or other sites offering easy access and transportation.
