Baseball's Start in China
China's sketchy and erratic baseball history dates back to 1863, when American missionaries established the Shanghai Baseball Club. Later missionaries and railroad engineers introduced the game elsewhere in China in the 1800s and by 1895, a Shanghai university and two in Beijing (Peking) sponsored teams.
Missionaries continued to spread the game through a handful of universities, with league play and tournaments held until 1925. Meanwhile, Chinese in Hawaii formed an Overseas Baseball Club that in 1911 defeated the New York Giants in an exhibition game held in San Francisco.
