A Fan of the Fan
One influence for Playmaker Journal was the Fan, a small, independently published baseball magazine created by the late Hall Of Fame artist Mike Schacht. It is no longer published and it lasted for about a decade in the 1990s. It was an editorial mix of stories, essays, memoirs, poems, and artwork about baseball. At 5 1/4 inches wide and 8 1/2 inches tall, it was perfect for slipping into a coat pocket for a quick read anywhere. One of my favorite elements of the magazine were the covers. The artwork was always eye-catching and memorable but the cover itself as a whole was simple and understated.
